Our youth spotlight this month is on Janisse Ruis! Janisse is currently living in Billings, MT, and is a member of MAHA and Region 6. We asked to tell us a little bit about herself and her horses, and this is what she said:
"I've been riding for 9 years, and got my first horse, SL Beau Jackson, 8 years ago. He hadn't been handled in five years and it took me a year before he would even let me catch him in the pasture. Not to mention, he was very underweight and had a bad past. Now he comes up to me every time I whistle at him from the pasture gate! We got his Arabian papers around three years ago and were surprised that our free rescue pony had such amazing bloodlines!
He taught me how to ride. We started off with Western and did a few rodeos, but we both decided we would like English better. I taught myself how to jump on him and he can go up to 2 feet, but we mainly do dressage and Arabian shows now. He's 27 now and still kicking butt;)
I got WC Maestro this past February all the way from Virginia! I really wanted a half-Arabian jumper (his other half is Oldenburg) so I could jump but still do Arab shows. When we got him, he was also really malnourished because he spent the whole winter without a blanket or grain in 3 feet of snow. Then a month after he came to Montana, he got pneumonia. I've only really been riding him since April or May, and he's only been under saddle for a year and a half, so he's pretty green for an 8 year old.
He loves to jump and when he lived in Virginia, he did 3 day eventing. He's free jumped over 4 feet. Since he was with a trainer then, but he's with me now, we've mainly stuck to showing at 2'3" for now. Once we've had more training, I'd like to do cross country and eventing. He's made so much progress in the short time we've been together! At a jumping show in June I fell off twice in one day, and just yesterday we jumped a 2'9" oxer!
Both my boys have such unique personalities and they mean the world to me. They try their hardest and I love them with all my heart. I can't wait to see what our future together holds. My goal is to take them both to Arabian Sport Horse Nationals, so I can do dressage with Bo, and jump with Maestro!
Thanks for sharing, Janisse! We wish you best of luck, and are confident that you will be showing at SHN in the very near future!
